Sustainability
As we approach the ISTH 2025 Congress, the ISTH and our partners are committed to acting sustainability and environmentally responsible in as many ways as possible. To achieve this, the Society has implemented several actions to reduce its environmental impact. See a few of the initiatives below.
ISTH & Partners Sustainability Initiatives:
-
Removal of plastic badge holders: Since 2023, the ISTH Congress no longer uses plastic badge holders, eliminating a significant source of waste.
-
Paperless practices: The ISTH no longer prints an abstract book, state-of-the-art book, extended program book or daily newspaper. These can now all be found online. In addition, we no longer allow paper inserts from supporters to be included in your Congress bag. Combined, these actions save at least 15 million pages of paper, or approximately 1,500 trees.
-
Sustainable Shipping: We focus on sustainability when it comes to shipping by collaborating with eco-friendly partners and consolidating shipments when possible.
-
Recycling and Reuse: Using recycled or reusable materials for furniture and signage throughout the exhibit hall when possible.
Walter E. Washington Convention Center & Washington D.C. Sustainability Initiatives:
The Walter E Washington Convention Center (WEWCC) and the city of Washington D.C. have put many sustainable practices in place. A few initiatives are highlighted below. Please see this website for more information.
-
Recycling: Color coded recycling stations are available throughout the center to increase recycling and encourage waste minimization
-
LEED Platinum Certified: The WEWCC has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum. LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. When awarded the WEWCC was one of 1 of 4 convention centers in North America with this distinction.
-
Sustainability District: WEWCC is a part of the Sustainability District, which is Washington D.C.’s citywide program focused on making the city greener. The US Green Building Council recognized the District as the first LEED Platinum City in the world.
-
Energy Conservation: LED lights and motion sensor lights have been implemented throughout the center to conserve energy.
